Field of Dreams MLB Game Set For August 2020

It’s been 30 years since Field of Dreams dropped in theaters, giving us one of baseball’s most iconic films and one of film’s most iconic quotes. Despite its success, however, and the film’s legendary status in the baseball world, Major League Baseball has never sent teams to Dyersville, Iowa for a game — not even an exhibition game.

That’s all changing in 2020. MLB teams, finally, “will come” to the iconic Field of Dreams site on August 13th, 2020 for the first-ever official MLB game. Fittingly, because of the ghosts that emerge from the corn in the 1989 blockbuster, the Chicago White Sox will be taking on the New York Yankees. The game will be a home game for the White Sox, according to Front Office Sports, and FOX will provide national television coverage.

Rather than playing on the field that exists, which has few seats and amenities, MLB will construct a temporary field for the event, which plans to seat 8,000 fans. See below:

The game will also be the first-ever MLB game in the state of Iowa.

The announcement follows an MLB trend of playing games in places other than traditional big-league ballparks. They’ve sent teams to Williamsport, PA in recent years for the MLB Little League Classic, with the third-annual game coming up on August 18th between the Pirates and Cubs, and to start this season, the Mariners and A’s played a series in Tokyo.
