The Funniest Royal Rumble Eliminations

When I think of the Royal Rumble, I always think of 1994 when Lex Luger and Bret Hart went over the ropes at the same time. It had never happened before and the drama was real. They had all sorts of replays going and the fact that they actually pulled it off was incredible. Plus, it followed one of the scariest moments of my childhood when The Undertaker popped up on the Jumbotron after having his casket nailed shut by all the heels. Needless to say, the Rumble is tops in my book. You never know who’s coming out next, and, because I ride for the old heads more than the new guard, I’m always hoping they run out a legend as a surprise (see: Diesel in 2011, the crowd went nutssss).

The Rumble, in addition to giving us some awesome artwork back in the day, is also a perfect setting for some solid comedy. I’m thinking of a few moments in particular, and I’m going to share them because they still hold up to this day.

Mo in 1995

Blink and you might have missed Mo’s career in the WWF. He was the less-interesting half of Men on a Mission — who somehow have more tag-team titles than The Rockers — then Sir Mo during Mable’s “King” run. OK, you’re caught up. It didn’t take long, much like his three-second Royal Rumble appearance during the 1995 battle royal. He entered and was promptly flung high into the air (and over the top rope) by King Kong Bundy. It was such a Mo moment.

Jerry “The King” Lawler in 1997

Remember that time when Jerry Lawler won that battle royal on Raw? Yeah, well, in 1997, he didn’t win…not even close. No one even knew he was going to be in it — he was on the broadcast! But when #22 came up, he dropped his headset and jumped in the ring. He did mess up a perfectly good Sharpshooter from Bret Hart on Stone Cold — the only two guys left in the ring — but because his three-second stint was hilarious, he gets a pass. Bret Hart hit him with the same uppercut he’d eventually land on Vince McMahon post-Montreal Screwjob, lifting him up off his feet and over the top rope.

Bushwacker Luke in 1991

The 1991 Royal Rumble was a gem. Thirty-year-old spoiler alert: the Hulkster won, and, famously, Randy Savage no-showed in the #18 spot. The real prize came at #27, though. My man Bushwacker Luke came marching down the aisle, arms flailing per usual, only to get bounced by Earthquake as soon as he entered the ring. In on one side, out on the other, arms never stopping. And that’s what made it great. It gets my vote for funniest Royal Rumble exit of all time.
