George Mason AC Dane Fischer Hired as William & Mary Head Coach

Dane Fischer, now a former assistant for George Mason, was hired by William & Mary to be their next head basketball coach.

For the last four seasons, Dane Fischer has been on George Mason’s bench as the top assistant to head coach Dave Paulsen. Now, Fischer will have to find his own assistant coaches because on Tuesday, he was announced as the new head coach at William & Mary.

Fischer will take over for Tony Shaver, who spent a tremendous amount of time leading the Tribe. From 2003 until this past season, Shaver was the head mean for William & Mary, though in all that time he never made an NCAA Tournament.

According to William & Mary’s website, Dane Fischer will be formally introduced on Wednesday morning at Kaplan Arena.

“I am incredibly honored to be the next head men’s basketball coach at William & Mary,” Fischer said. “There are very few institutions in the country that blend academic excellence with high-level athletics as well as William & Mary, and I can’t wait to get to know our current student-athletes as quickly as possible. My family and I look forward to immersing ourselves on this campus and in the Williamsburg community, as we strive to lead the Tribe to the top of the CAA and into the NCAA Tournament.”

While at Mason, Fischer helped the team to multiple winning seasons, including a 20-win campaign in 2016-17. Prior to Mason, he also coached at Rider and Bucknell and had a playing career at Ithaca College in Upstate NY.

Paulsen, it should be noted, took to Twitter to congratulate Fischer after the news was announced.
