Georgetown Basketball Living and Dying By Freshman
On Tuesday evening, the Georgetown Hoyas lost a tight game to No. 15 Marquette by a final score of 74-71. Shortly before the final buzzer sounded, though, the Hoyas wasted a golden opportunity to shock their Big East rivals.
With four seconds remaining and Marquette leading by one, the Hoyas had the ball on their end with a chance to take the lead. Freshman point guard James Akinjo wound up with the ball in his hands but instead of finding one of his teammates for an open look, Akinjo took matters into his own hands. You can imagine what happened next; Akinjo drove and hoisted a layup between multiple defenders as head coach Patrick Ewing looked on in disbelief. Georgetown was forced to foul and the game ended in utter disappointment.
Akinjo finished the game 1-for-10 from the field.
This is what happens when you rely so heavily on freshman — sometimes they hit deep threes to save games, other times they make horrible decisions to lose games.
Speaking to that, Georgetown wouldn’t have even been in position to have a shot at the end had another freshman, Mac McClung, not gotten hot and scored 24 points. Live by the gun, die by the gun.
With the loss, the Hoyas are 0-5 against ranked teams under Ewing, according to The Washington Post. They’ll now host Creighton on January 21st at Capital One Arena, followed by a road game against St. John’s on January 27th.
Georgetown is now 12-6 on the season and 2-3 in Big East play.
