Mark Cuban Promises Dirk “The Biggest, Most Badass Statue”
Last night, Dirk Nowitzki played his last NBA game in Dallas, the city to which he brought a title and turned into a respectable hoops town. He started, obviously, and was able to have a send-off similar to Kobe Bryant‘s a few years ago; you know, shooting a ton because the game doesn’t matter either way. On 31 shots, Dirk went for 30 points, including a slam dunk and a gang of threes, and added eight boards and a few dimes to his final Dallas box score.
After the game, he confirmed that he was retiring after the 2018-19 season ends.
Perhaps the best part of his home finale was his send-off and the promise from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban — wearing a Dirk baseball jersey — to give the 14-time NBA All-Star a “job for life,” a retired number, and “the biggest, most badass statue ever.”
Dirk is the Mavs; he made them into a real NBA franchise. So, everything that comes his way from them is deserved and probably not enough in the long run. That said, a statue is a real honor and at this point, I’d say it’s definitely going to feature his patented one-legged fadeaway.
The Mavs beat Phoenix in Dirk’s home finale, winning 120-109 despite 51 points from Jamal Crawford. Now, the Mavs have one more game to finish the 2018-19 season; they play at San Antonio tonight at 7:00 P.M ET.
