‘Too Old To Die Young’ Trailer Brings You Into LA’s Seedy Underbelly

Nicolas Winding Refn throws his hat into the streaming wars ring with his new show Too Old To Die Young for Amazon.

Miles Teller stars in the new series from Refn that features ten episodes at reportedly 90 minutes each, set to stream on Amazon Prime on June 14th. The new series co-stars John Hawkes and Jena Malone which is set mainly in Los Angeles and features “Yakuza soldiers, cartel assassins, Russian mafia captains, and working-class hitmen.”  The polarizing director has a knack for visual storytelling, and this trailer does plenty to get the crime genre fans excited. Refn has the ability to leave you exhausted after watching his films, even something like Only God Forgives with is only an hour and a half long, so with each episode here being the same length, some may worry it may be too much Refn for a ten-episode run. We can only hope it ends up more like Drive and less like Only God Forgives.

The series was co-written (alongside Refn) by Ed Brubaker who has several previous writing credits in the comic book world, writing for DC, Marvel, and even joining HBO’s Westworld staff in 2016. With Brubaker’s comic book background, this series could potentially be a take on the genre that television has not realized it has been missing. Refn’s undeniable visual style paired with a comic book sensibility sounds intriguing and exciting to say the least.

Cliff Martinez, who has worked with Refn on each film since Drive, returns as composer for the series after previously working in television on Steven Soderberg’s The Knick for Cinemax. Martinez’s sensibility as a composer has worked perfectly with Refn’s flashy, neo-noir cinematography in the past, relying heavily on synthesizers and digital drum machines as textures.

Too Old To Die Young is set to hit Amazon Prime on June 14th, 2019.
