Meet the MLB’s Worst Hitters in 2018

Looking at the worst MLB hitters during the 2018 MLB regular season from a few different angles.

Now that the MLB regular season is over and we’ve made way for the postseason, I want to look back on some stats from the 162-game slate. Namely, the league’s batting average leaderboard. Rather than looking at the Top 10, though, it’s more fun to see who is at the bottom of the leaderboard (from a few different perspectives).

MLB’s Worst Hitters (2018)

Worst Qualified Hitter: Chris Davis (Baltimore Orioles)

Of all the qualified hitters in baseball this year, nobody did it worse than Chris David. In fact, he’s the only qualified hitter who finished with a batting average below .200. To make matters worse, David was the highest-paid player on the Baltimore Orioles this year.

By many accounts, it was the worst performance in the history of modern baseball.

2018 Stats: 79-for-470, .168 BA, -2.5 oWAR

Worst Unqualified Hitter: Matt den Dekker (New York Mets)

Unlike Davis, Matt den Dekker only played in 8 games during 2018. However, he went hitless in all 18 of his at-bats during this time, the most ABs by any position player without a hit. Poor guy.

2018 Stats: 0-for-18, .000 BA, -0.3 oWAR

Worst Qualified Hitting Pitcher: Ivan Nova (Pittsburgh Pirates)

There were 50 pitchers in 2018 who has at least 40 at-bats. Ivan Nova, a starter for the Pirates, was the worst among them with just one hit in over 50 ABs.

2018 Stats: 1-for-53, .019 BA, -0.6 oWAR

Worst Unqualified Hitting Pitcher: Corey Oswalt (New York Mets)

Of the hundreds of other pitchers who stepped to the plate and accrued less than 40 at-bats, Corey Oswalt, another Mets player, was the worst. Oswalt went hitless in all 18 of his ABs this year, complete with 10 strikeouts.

On the mound, however, the rookie did pick up three wins in 12 starts.
