Mets: Inconsistent Michael Conforto Is Like 2016 All Over Again
When Michael Conforto came up with the 2015 New York Mets, he brought a new life to the team. In fact, right when he came up was the time their season turned around, a season which wound up in the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. But then the next season he fell apart, and the season after that, he was an All-Star for the National League. This year, however, he’s been so bad that he may be demoted. So now I wonder…is there anyone more inconsistent than Michael Conforto? I mean, his numbers are SO strange to look at.
Michael Conforto Batting Average/WAR By Year (as of 6/11/2018)
- 2015: .270 BA; 2.1 WAR
- 2016: .220 BA; 0.5 WAR
- 2017: .279 BA; 3.7 WAR
- 2018: .219 BA; 0.4 WAR
Per ESPN, the team is thinking about sending Conforto to Vegas to work on his swing. Mets’ fans will remember this was literally the exact same thing that happened in 2016. Back then, he went down to the minors on two separate occasions before finishing the season in a pinch-hitting role. Luckily, he hit well in Triple-A in 2016 (.422 BA) and, of course, he bounced back with an All-Star season in 2017.
From the ESPN report:
“Citing multiple sources, the Post reported late Saturday that team officials think a demotion to Triple-A Las Vegas could benefit Conforto while simultaneously helping the Mets solve a logjam in their outfield.”
Conforto isn’t the only problem the Mets have right now, either. They have the Jose Reyes situation, a new Asdrubal Cabrera injury, the Cespedes saga, and the main problem which has to do with wins and losses.
No one wants to see Conforto go down because he’s a good dude but if it gives the team the bat he had in 2017, it’ll be totally worth it.
