Report: New Jersey Devils Owner Pursuing New York Mets Bid
According to Sportico writer Scott Soshnick, the principal owner of the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers, Josh Harris, is looking to grow his sports empire by pursuing a bid on the New York Mets. Harris is the co-founder of Apollo Global Management.
Minority owner David Blitzer is also involved, per the report. A spokeswoman for Harris declined to comment.
“Talks are still in the early stages,” the report states.
This past December, the Wilpon family was reportedly selling the majority of the team to Steve Cohen for $2.6 billion. Talks broke down and now new bids are being reported, including one by former MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez and his wife, Jennifer Lopez.
The Mets, according to Sportico, lose $50 million per year.
Last year, the Mets made a late push and finished the season with an 86-76 record. The last time they made a big-time run was in 2015 when they lost in the World Series to Kansas City. They have won two World Series in their history (1969, 1986).
