Week 1 NFL Storylines to Pay Attention To

A lot can change between now and Week 1 of the NFL season. For the time being, there are the masks and six-foot rules you’d expect. A few months from now? Maybe we’ve moved beyond some of that stuff. No one knows for sure; we can only hope things improve and the rumors of a November resurgence are offbase.

Nevertheless, you can bet the NFL is going to move forward and play some darn football games. The draft happened, the schedule is set, and players are preparing for action. We’ll do the same.

Week 1 kicks off on September 10th with a Thursday night game between Houston and Kansas City, followed by a loaded Sunday and the annual Week 1 Monday Night Football doubleheader.

Here are the storylines I’m looking forward to in Week 1.

Houston-Kansas City

The NFL is the most-watched sport in the country. With everything we’ve gone through recently, the first game of the new season is going to be massively impactful. Plus…it’s just a great matchup featuring two of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Miami-New England

New England is now in the post-Tom Brady era, and I’m here for it in Week 1. I imagine the storyline will lose its luster after a few games. They’re not going to be great, and they’re not going to be awful — where’s the fun in that?

Philadelphia-Washington

Are the Redskins going to be the grown-up team their fanbase is hoping for? We’ll see right off the bat in Week 1 with a tough division matchup against Philadelphia. I imagine Ron Rivera will have done wonders with their defense but the Dwayne Haskins question mark is large.

Tampa Bay-New Orleans

Yeah, Tom Brady in a different jersey. It’s happening. Also, how will the hometown crowd react to Drew Brees? Or will his comments have died down by September 13th?

Dallas-LA Rams

The Cowboys are in a new era under Mike McCarthy after Jason Garritt underachieved for a decade. And, even though they’re playing in Los Angeles against a team who was in the Super Bowl 18 months ago, Sports Betting Dime’s NFL odds page lists the Cowboys as three-point favorites over the Rams. That’s saying something!

Tennessee-Denver

Monday Night Football will look and sound different this year (no more Booger), and things are also changing in Denver. It’s the Drew Locke show now. He’s got plenty of weapons at his disposal and he’s an easy guy to cheer for. On the other side, the Titans made a statement when they backed up the Brinks truck for Ryan Tannehill. He’s gotta prove last year wasn’t a fluke.
