O’s Chris Davis Sets Unfortunate Record
O’s fans are trying something new with Chris Davis. Rather than boo him and his shortcomings, the fans have decided to give him support each time he steps up to the plate. The first way wasn’t working so why not try something different, right?
Davis, however, hasn’t had different results, even with the cheers. He went 0-for-5 on Monday despite hitting the ball hard, pushing his hitless streak to 49 at-bats, a new record for position players. Per MASN’s Roch Kubatko, if he doesn’t get a hit in his next two plate appearances, he’ll also break the record for plate appearances without a hit. Davis is currently at 56; the record, 57 plate appearances without a hit, is held by Tony Bernazard.
The team isn’t ready to bail on Davis, though. Orioles pitcher Andrew Cashner told MASN after the game that “everybody in here’s pulling for CD.”
O’s manager Brandon Hyde also spoke well of Davis following the team’s 12-4 win over Oakland.
“Just pulling for him to get a hit and for the ball to hit the outfield grass somewhere and it didn’t. It’s one of those things. You’ve just got to stay upbeat, stay positive.
“He’s battling, he’s battling and it’s cool to see. You just feel for him and wishing something would fall.”
