O’s Sign Dan Straily to Help Starting Rotation

On Friday, the Baltimore Orioles announced the signing of Dan Straily, a veteran right-hander with a lot of MLB experience. The deal, according to SiriusXM’s Craig Mish, is for one year and $575,000, and also includes a $250,000 payment if he’s traded later in the year.

Baltimore will be Straily’s sixth club since his debut in 2012 with Oakland. Most recently, he was with Miami, who released him on March 25th, as well as Chicago (’14), Houston (’15), and Cincinnati (’16).

The move will immediately help the O’s thin starting rotation, as Straily will likely slide into the No. 5 starter spot. Thus far, they’ve used four regular starting pitchers — Dylan Bundy, Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner, and David Hess — and reliever Nate Karns. Karns, however, is more of an opener than a starter; in two starts this season, he’s pitched four innings combined. Rather than turning games over to the bullpen so early, Straily, hopefully, can give the team five or six solid innings.

Overall, this is a low-risk move with potential for a big-time reward. The team needs starting pitching badly and Straily has proved he can still perform. Last season, he started 23 games for Miami while posting a rock-solid 4.12 ERA. At the price they signed him for, you really can’t go wrong.

In his career, Dan Straily has appeared in 142 games, with 132 starts. His career ERA is a respectable 4.23 and in three separate seasons, he’s posted double-digit wins with a winning record.
