Redskins Coaching Staff Now Features Rob Ryan
The Washington Redskins coaching staff just got a lot cooler with the hire of former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
Rob Ryan, brother of former Jets and Bills head coach Rex Ryan, is now on the Washington Redskins coaching staff as the inside linebackers coach. And while some might not like the hire, it makes the team a lot more interesting and Ryan does, in fact, have a strong resume.
Although he hasn’t been on an NFL staff since 2016 — he’s been working in media since — Rob Ryan served as the defensive coordinator of four different franchises from 2004 through 2015 — Oakland, Cleveland, Dallas, and New Orleans. His last job was in Buffalo, where Rex was the head coach, as an assistant coach.
When he was in Cleveland, the Browns — 2-5 at the time — pulled an upset over New England thanks to Ryan’s gameplan. They held Tom Brady and the Patriots to just 14 points en route to a 34-14 win. As the Saints DC in 2013, his unit finished near the top of the league in several categories, including points allowed per game.
On the Redskins Talk podcast, Ryan said that he “reached out” to the team and that he’s “so happy to be joining” head coach Jay Gruden.
Overall, I love this hire, and it could be argued that he’s more qualified than current DC Greg Manusky. If Manusky gets canned in the middle of next season, there’s a strong possibility that Ryan takes over for the time being.
