Town Of Lovettsville, VA Will Rename Themselves Capitalsville With Caps Game 7 Win

When the World Series and Super Bowl come around, you always hear about these quirky stories that appear out of nowhere. As it seems, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are no different. Per Zach Campbell of the Loudoun Times-Mirror, the Mayor of Lovettsville, Va will rename his town ‘Capitalsville’ if Washington can pull off a Game 7 win over Tampa Bay.

Lovettsville, a town that isn’t even a square mile in size, is 55 miles north of Washington, D.C. on the tip of Virginia. Folks outside the DMV area should know that a Virginia town (Arlington) already serves as the home of the Caps’ practice facility.

In addition to renaming his town — an act that would be temporary — the Mayor of Lovettsville (Bob Zoldos) is also going to light it up red.

From the Loudoun Times-Mirror:

“I have red lights rigged up in my house so that when they score tonight, it will be just like the sirens at the game,” Mayor Zoldos said. “I’m only in office for another month, and I’m looking at this as an opportunity to honor not only the Capitals and what they’ve done, but also to help kind of put Lovettsville on the map.”

Besides the fact that a Tampa Bay-Vegas Stanley Cup would draw crummy TV ratings, this stunt is a good reason for any undecided sports fan to root for the Caps tonight. And for the sake of Lovettsville, I think Zoldos is dead-on accurate when he says it will put the town “on the map” — at least a little bit. I mean, The Washington Post will have to run at least something about the new town of Capitalsville, right?

Washington will play Game 7 at Tampa Bay tonight at 8 P.M ET on NBC Sports Network.
