Trey Mancini, Chris Davis Leading Orioles in MLB All-Star Voting

If you’ve watched any Baltimore Orioles games since the MLB All-Star ballot came out a few weeks ago, it’s no surprise who MASN (and the entire organization) wants you to vote for. Trey Mancini, of course, is who I’m referring to and he’s definitely deserving of the push…and your vote.

Mancini, the undisputed face of the franchise in 2019, currently leads the O’s in WAR (1.5), hits (73), runs scored (44), and doubles (17), all while providing a steady presence in the middle of the batting order and versatility in the field. If not for breakout seasons from Hanser Alberto and Renato Nunez, Mancini would also be leading Baltimore in batting average (.299 BA, behind only Alberto, .311) and home runs (13 HR, behind only Nunez, 16 HR).

Today, the first update came out for American League All-Star Primary vote and Mancini turned out to be Baltimore’s top vote-getter and the only player with 100,000-plus votes. In terms of rank, he’s on the MLB.com leaderboard (No. 17) among AL outfielders, though only nine will advance to The Starters Election.

The Starters Election begins on June 28th and runs for 28 hours to determine who will start in the 2019 MLB All-Star Game. Each position (excluding outfielders) will send the top three vote-getters in each league to The Starters Election; nine outfielders in each league advance.

Per the leaderboard, Mancini (100k) is a little more than 100k votes behind the No. 9 spot, currently held by Astros star Josh Reddick (220k). That said, each MLB team gets a representative; Mancini will almost certainly get picked for a reserve role to satisfy the Orioles guaranteed spot.

The only other current Baltimore Orioles player on the leaderboard is Chris Davis, rounding out the Top 10 for AL first baseman at No. 10. Davis received over 70,000 votes but trails The Starters Election cutoff by over 200k votes.

Davis, as much as we root for him, doesn’t deserve an All-Star nod in any form or fashion. He’s hitting just .161 with five home runs and is currently in the middle of a 1-for-22 slump. Plus, among Orioles position players, he’s tied for the lowest WAR (-0.8) with Cedric Mullins, a guy who’s already been sent down to the minors.

Former Orioles All-Star Jonathan Schoop, it should be noted, has more votes than both Mancini and Davis and ranks No. 4 among AL second baseman.

Unfortunately, the leaderboard for the NL hasn’t been released yet.

Voting is still open for the 2019 MLB All-Star Game, with the Primary running until June 21st at 4:00 P.M. If you want to see Trey Mancini (deservedly) advance to the next round and not have to rely on the league’s one-player-per-team requirement, GO VOTE! You can vote (here) on MLB.com five times per day. Or, if you simply Google “Trey Mancini” or “Dwight Smith Jr.” or whoever, you can submit a single-player vote right from Google. The latter is SUPER easy, and a great innovation from Google and Major League Baseball.
