UConn Cancels 2020 Football Season

The UConn Huskies pulled the plug on their football season, officially announcing the news on Wednesday. They were set to play their first football season as an independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference. Other sports, including basketball, will compete in the Big East, their former conference.

“The safety challenges created by COVID-19 place our football student-athletes at an unacceptable level of risk,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a release on their official website. “Ultimately, the student-athletes would rather preserve their year of eligibility with an eye to competing under more typical circumstances during the 2021 season.”

Life as an independent also would have been difficult this year. They had multiple games canceled because certain conferences bailed on their non-conference schedules, and other games were in question.

Head coach Randy Edsall is looking forward. “We will use this time to further player development within the program and gear ourselves to the 2021 season,” he said.

Players will remain enrolled in classes and have access to facilities and support services, per the release.

They’re the first FBS team to officially pull the plug on their season.
