UMBC Owned Virginia, But Their Twitter Account Owned THE ENTIRE INTERNET

So as you’ve heard, the UMBC Retrievers — a No. 16 seed — absolutely dismantled top-seeded Virginia by 20 points. The Retrievers 74-54 win was the first of its kind, breaking a 135-game winning streak in the No. 1 vs. No. 16 game.

It was nuts. UMBC was 12-24 from downtown and had the Cavaliers rattled pretty much from the jump. Brackets were busted, stars were made, and the internet went crazy.

No one went crazier than UMBC’s Twitter account (@UMBCAthletics), which actually made them the biggest star of the night. No bologna, the tweets were hilarious, complete with an absolute demolition of Seth Davis — who dismissed the Retrievers right off the bat. No one was safe, though. Anyone who doubted the dogs wound up getting roasted.

And with the team kickin’ ass on the court, their audience grew by the minute. Before the game, they had less than 5500 followers, but now, as I write this, their following has ballooned to over 50,000 (and counting). I’m literally refreshing their page every few seconds and their count has grown by hundreds each time. It’s legit #RetreiverFever up in this joint.

Here’s some of their Twitter gems — in no particular order — from their time in the nation’s spotlight. (Please note the Birdman reference in the tweet below, #classic.)

There’s a lot more to check out, I mean, they literally quoted Seth Davis’ “Virginia. Sharpie.” tweet for most of the first half.

You can follow them here.

Root for these guys next round, and whatever you do, follow along with their Twitter account during the game. It’s safe to say the followers will keep rolling in, and the university will probably get a huge spike in applications.
