2021 Virginia Baseball Regular Season Recap & Final Stats
Virginia stumbled out of the gate this season, putting themselves in serious jeopardy of having their season end right after their final regular-season game. Only the top 12 teams make the ACC Baseball Tournament and their 2-9 start in conference play had them at the bottom of the barrel.
Things started to shift at the beginning of April, about midway through their April 1st game at #6 Georgia Tech. They went down 6-0 early, reinforcing to all Virginia baseball fans watching that it was going to be another rough series (they hadn’t won an ACC series yet) and that this team just didn’t have it. Then all of the sudden, their offense came alive against one of the best teams in the country. Across their final two turns at-bat, they put up five runs and nearly stole the game. It wasn’t a win, but it was a hell of a moral victory, especially when you see what it started. The Hoos went and won Games 2 and 3 on the strength of 19 runs from their offense, earning their first ACC series victory in the process.
A dramatic extra-inning home victory against William & Mary followed, then a series win at Clemson. They were stringing things together and getting back on track. By the latter part of the regular season, they were officially on track. They won four consecutive conference series to finish the season, which included a few noteworthy games. On back-to-back Friday nights, they won games 18-1 and 17-0, the latter of which included a combined no-hitter by Andrew Abbott, Jake Berry, and Griff McGarry.
They went 9-3 over their final 12 games to finish the season 18-18 in the conference and earn the No. 8 seed in the 2021 ACC Baseball Tournament. They will be joined in Pool A by No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 12 Virginia Tech, and each team will play each other once during pool play.
