Virginia Baseball Ends Slide at Home Over Georgetown

On Wednesday, just 24 hours after losing on an extra-innings walk-off at VCU, the Virginia baseball team outlasted Georgetown to secure a 6-4 victory. They didn’t receive any style points, but the win was desperately needed. The team had lost seven of their last eight games after starting the season 26-3.

The standout of the night was certainly reliever Jay Woolfolk, who bounced back in a big way after allowing the walk-off on Tuesday in Richmond. The two-sport star put on a show in the seventh and eighth innings, striking out five consecutive batters with a mix of mid-90s fastballs and a biting slider. Paul Kosanovich came in to shut the door on Georgetown, earning the save with a clean ninth inning.

Counter to their reputation this year, there weren’t many big bops from the Wahoo offense. After a two-run single by Devin Ortiz in the first inning, they drove home their next four runs without hitting the ball out of the infield. Ethan Anderson and Griff O’Ferrall drew a bases-loaded walks, Max Cotier scored on a throwing error by Georgetown’s catcher, and Kyle Teel beat out an infield single with the bases loaded to score one. Cotier’s run and Teel’s RBI single came in the eighth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie and putting the Hoos up for good.

O’Ferrall drew four walks in the game from his leadoff spot. Justin Rubin was the only Virginia player to record multiple hits, going 2-4 and raising his season batting average to .371.

With the win over Georgetown (RPI #125) the boys improved to 28-10 on the season. They’ll now host North Carolina (RPI #46) in a three-game set which starts Friday at 6:00 p.m.

On Saturday, the Virginia-UNC baseball showdown is part of Wahoowa Weekend. At 1:00 p.m., the baseball and softball teams will play simultaneously, followed by the spring football game at 4:00 p.m. There is also a track meet scheduled for noon and other activities at Scott Stadium.
