Washington Nationals Trade For All-Star Yan Gomes
The Washington Nationals traded two prospects and a player to be named later to the Cleveland Indians for All-Star catcher Yan Gomes.
After a disappointing 2018 season, the Washington Nationals are making moves to get themselves back into the postseason. On Friday, they made a splash by acquiring an All-Star from the Cleveland Indians — Yan Gomes — in exchange for two prospects and a player to be named later.
According to ESPN, the Indians got right-handed pitcher Jefry Rodriguez and minor-league outfielder Daniel Johnson in exchange for Gomes.
Gomes, who hit .266 last year with 16 home runs, is the second catcher the Nationals picked up this offseason. Not too long ago, they signed Kurt Suzuki to a two-year, $10 million deal. Suzuki will begin his second stint with Washington in 2019 after playing in D.C. during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Like Gomes, Suzuki was also very productive last season with 12 home runs and a batting average of .271.
“Gomes will make $7 million next season and his contract includes club options for 2020 at $9 million with a $1 million buyout and for 2021 at $11 million.”
In an unrelated move, the Nationals also signed left-handed pitcher Sammy Solis to a one-year, $850,000 contract.
