WATCH: ESPN Releases Sosa-McGwire 30 for 30 Trailer
On June 14th, the story of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa‘s 1998 home run chase will hit televisions all over the country. ESPN will air their 30 for 30 — titled Long Gone Summer — at 9 p.m. ET. The first trailer for the project was released over the weekend and can be seen below.
Both Sosa and McGwire were interviewed and featured prominently in the doc, which fittingly drops in June, a month that saw Sosa launch 20 dingers and gain the attention of his eventual rival. Their home run chase went a long way at the time, reeling fans back in from the strike that happened a few years prior. Many say that the memorable summer of 1998 saved baseball.
When it all shook out, McGwire was the one who broke Roger Maris‘ record, hitting his 62nd against Sosa’s Cubs on September 8th, 1998 (one day after tying Maris’ record). At the time Big Mac broke the record, Sosa was sitting at 58 homers. Combined, McGwire (70) and Sosa (66) would hit 136 home runs during the 1998 season, followed by 128 combined in 1999 — McGwire (65), Sosa (63).
Over the next decade, Barry Bonds came along and broke McGwire’s record, and all three would be at the forefront of steroid allegations, lawsuits, and reporting. This part of their life/career will surely be covered in the back half of the documentary.
“In retrospect,” Bob Costas says in the trailer, “there was a price to pay for it.”
Neither men are in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
