WATCH: “Ghosts of Highway 20” True Crime Docuseries

The Oregonian’s new true crime docuseries — “Ghosts of Highway 20” — is a must-see for any true crime lover.

Over the last few years, true crime has gained a massive following. From podcasts like Serial and Accused to documentary series like The Jinx and Keepers, there is a fanbase always ready to consume the next great true crime story. As the genre has grown, though, fans have been forced to sift through the overwhelming amount of junk in order to actually find the good stuff. It’s frustrating at times but nothing compares to a great tale told in a serialized format; so search, wait, and sift we must.

Luckily, the latest great story was easy to find — thanks to the great folks at Longform. Today, Ghosts of Highway 20 was the first story in my feed on Longform, and it’s everything a true crime fanatic could want; Ghosts of Highway 20 is a five-part docuseries reported by a major publication that tells an addicting story.

The people investigating the story are always the most important factor, in my opinion, and Ghosts of Highway 20 had a major newspaper — The Oregonian — doing the digging. When major publications get on a story, opposed to amateur reporters, we’re blessed with journalism’s greatest tool: resources. Here, The Oregonian not only provides compelling video, but it’s backed up with top-notch pictures from Beth Nakamura and fantastic writing by Noelle Crombie. In short, the production value for this true crime story is absolutely outstanding.

Nakamura and director/editor Dave Killen are also credited as writers (alongside Crombie) on Ghosts of Highway 20.

While I want you to watch the story for yourselves, a quick rundown goes like this: the investigation follows a highway worker who committed multiple crimes (including murder) along a stretch of road in Oregon where he worked. Among others, you’ll hear from survivors, local police, and the murderer himself.
