Washington Redskins Playoff Chances Down to 9 Percent

The Washington Redskins playoff chances took a big hit this week with a blowout loss to the New York Giants.

Unfortunately, the Mark Sanchez era in Washington, D.C. didn’t last long. He was pulled in the third quarter against the New York Giants after failing to lead a scoring drive. He didn’t get much help to start the game — with Jordan Reed and Jamison Crowder dropping his first two passes of the game — but after that he threw two interceptions and took five sacks.

On the bright side, however, backup Josh Johnson looked good in relief. Besides efficient passing (11-for-16 with one touchdown), he proved he can move around back there: Johnson didn’t take any sacks, rushed for 45 yards on seven carries including an eight-yard touchdown run. Plus, he was able to convert both two-point tries with passes to Vernon Davis and Michael Floyd. By the looks of things, it’s now the Josh Johnson era in D.C.

But Johnson will have to pull a miracle over the Redskins’ final three games. According to FiveThirtyEight, Washington has a nine-percent chance to make the postseason, down from 26 percent before Week 14.

While the Redskins playoff chances are slim, they’re not dead yet. Washington (6-7) has less than one-percent chance to win the NFC East but they have as many wins as the Vikings, Panthers, and Eagles. The Vikings, however, have a tie on their resume and haven’t played their Week 14 game yet.

Washington, now losers of four consecutive games, will close the season against Jacksonville (Week 15), Tennessee (Week 16), and Philadelphia (Week 17).
