West Virginia & Howard Among Teams in 2019 CBI Tournament

This year’s CBI (College Basketball Invitational) is unlike normal years; rather than a group exclusively made up of low and mid-major programs, the 2019 field will include three high-profile teams from major conferences. West Virginia from the Big 12 will be one of the teams playing in the event despite a 14-20 record, as well as DePaul from the Big East and South Florida from the American Athletic Conference. Last year, there were no conferences as big as the aforementioned trio, and the same goes for the 2017 event.

In addition to the two outliers, one local team from D.C. will have a shot at raising the trophy, Howard, as well as a team from rural Virginia, the Longwood Lancers.

Games in the CBI are played on campus, culminating with a best-of-three final round between the two remaining teams. Locally, Howard will travel for their game in the first round, while Longwood and West Virginia will host their first games. You can see the entire first round slate below:

It should be noted that several teams declined an invitation to the CBI, likely because there’s a $50,000 entry fee to play.
