George Mason Basketball Alumni Reuniting For TBT

A group of George Mason basketball alumni, including Folarin Campbell and Will Thomas from their Cinderella run in ’06, are reuniting to hopefully make a run at the $2 million TBT prize.

Off-shoot basketball tournaments and leagues have become a thing. Like, they actually work and people care. You definitely can’t say the same thing for football but for whatever reason, basketball folks do it right. There’s the BIG3, the 3×3 college conference tournament, and then the TBT (The Basketball Tournament), which sort of started the trend.

The TBT is like your local 5-on-5 basketball tournament except there’s real players, ESPN cameras, and a big bag of cash at the end. This year, the 64-team, single-elimination tournament will have a grand prize of $2 million.

And a group of George Mason alumni, some from their Cinderella run in 2006, will hope to secure the cash.

The team, playing as The Green Machine, will feature Folarin Campbell and Will Thomas from their ’06 team, as well as Lamar Butler, who will serve as head coach. Other former George Mason players include Isaiah Tate (07-11), Sherrod Wright (09-14), Mike Morrison (08-12), Ryan Pearson (08-12) and Bryon Allen (10-14).

In addition to the GMU guys, they also have a secret weapon on their roster from nearby Georgetown: Austin Freeman, who led the Hoyas in scoring during his junior and senior seasons.

Phillip Scrubb, who’s played in the NBA Summer League, rounds out the roster, while George Mason alum Corey Edwards will serve as an assistant coach.

So the team is stacked with George Mason alumni. Great, right? But now the fans need to show their support.

The TBT is a progressive tournament so they want teams in that have excited fanbases that buy tickets, etc. Right now, The Green Machine has 180 supporters on their TBT page; that’s not bad…but the more the merrier.

If they do get selected for the field of 64, they’ll compete in the Richmond Regional (July 26-28) at the Siegel Center. The VCU alumni team is hosting so it’d definitely be nice to go in there and knock the piss out of Ram Nation.
