Justin Kier Granted 5th Year, Enters Transfer Portal

UPDATE: Several teams have contacted Justin Kier since he announced his intention to transfer, per Rivals. Ohio State, Georgia Tech, Butler, Arkansas, Wake Forest and DePaul headline an impressive (and growing) list.

Justin Kier will be playing basketball again next year, though it remains to be seen which uniform he’ll be wearing. Kier announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he’d been granted a fifth year of eligibility and that he’d be entering the transfer portal.

Kier, who won the Atlantic 10 Most Improved Player Award after the 2018-19 season, was limited to just nine games last year for George Mason. He started the year on the shelf, missing the team’s first six games, then eased his way back into the lineup. By his eighth game, he had returned to the starting lineup and wound up playing 38 minutes in a 61-49 loss to St. Bonaventure. In his ninth game, he played a season-high 39 minutes and scored a season-best 18 points in a 76-63 win over LaSalle. Unfortunately, it was his last game of the season. He spent the rest of the season in a boot and was honored on Mason’s senior night.

While Kier is entering the transfer portal, he said on Twitter that he has “not ruled out returning to Fairfax.”

“I want to make sure I explore all options available,” he wrote.

In 108 total games, the Grottoes, VA native averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. In addition to his Most Improved Award, he earned All Atlantic-10 honors after the 2018-19 season.

Kier joins Goanar Mar, who played three seasons with Mason, in the transfer portal. Jason Douglas-Stanley, who played two seasons at Mason, already announced he was moving on to Manhattan.
