Maryland Football: Terps Kicker and Punter Got in a Brawl
A kicker and punter from Maryland’s football team got in a brawl this past week.
Things keep getting crazier for the Maryland football program. Fresh off the DJ Durkin nightmare, news dropped today on ESPN that a reserve kicker, Matt Barber, and their starting punter, Wade Lees, got in a brawl that left Barber with all sorts of injuries. On top of that, the Terps were blown out today at home against Michigan State (24-3).
“The University of Maryland’s police department has opened an investigation into the Tuesday altercation between Barber and punter Wade Lees. Barber previously told ESPN that he needed stitches above his right eye and suffered a dislocated right shoulder after Lees, of Melbourne, Australia, assaulted him.”
The report added that Barber, a senior kicker who has never attempted a kick for Maryland, has not been around the team since the fight. Lees, on the other hand, is Maryland’s primary punter and played in their game against the Spartans. Now a junior, Wade Lees has been a three-year starter for the Terps.
ESPN report:
“He has not been around,” Canada told reporters after the Terrapins’ 24-3 loss to Michigan State. “Whenever I see Matt Barber, we’ll see where he wants to be as far as being on the team.”
While the fight happened the same day that Durkin returned to the team, ESPN’s article revealed that “the altercation had nothing to do with Durkin.”

The Terps, now 5-4, can become eligible for a bowl game next week (November 10th) when they travel to Indiana.
