Slackie Brown’s Quarter-Season NFL Awards and Superlatives

After sitting through four weeks of football, Slackie Brown picks the major NFL awards and superlatives.

Now that we’re a quarter of the way through the 2018 NFL season, it’s time to look back on things. Here, we’ll pick the major NFL awards and superlatives up to this point (which will surely change by the time the regular season ends).

Biggest Surprise: Mitchell Trubisky (Chicago Bears)

Right now, Trubisky has a quarterback rating over 100 while leading the Bears to a 3-1 record. This team has been a joke since the Jay Cutler era and the league is better when they’re competitive.

Biggest Disappointment: Sam Bradford (Arizona Cardinals)

Luckily for Arizona sports fans, the nightmare is over. Bradford, who led the team to 20 points in three games, was demoted to third-string in favor of rookie Josh Rosen and veteran Mike Glennon. Overall, Bradford turned the ball over six times and was sacked six times in his time as Arizona’s starter. Comparatively, he threw just two touchdown passes.

Coach of the Year: Matt Nagy (Chicago Bears)

Besides Trubisky, the Chicago Bears first-year head coach also deserves a lot of credit. He brought in some of that Andy Reid magic from Kansas City and the team has totally bought in. Maybe they don’t make the playoffs this year but they’re going to be Super Bowl contenders in the near future.

NFL MVP: Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City)

Not a lot to say here that you don’t already know. Mahomes, after taking over for Alex Smith, is the NFL’s darling right now after throwing 1,000 touchdown passes in his first three NFL starts.

Comeback Player of the Year: Ryan Tannehill (Miami Dolphins)

Way back in 2016, Tannehill had his best season as a pro. Then in 2017, he tore up his left leg in August and had to miss the entire season. Now this year, the former Texas A&M star is picking up where he left off. Miami is 3-1 so far with Tannehill boasting a 106.1 quarterback rating.

Defensive Player of the Year: Khalil Mack (Chicago Bears)

Five sacks, four forced fumbles, and a pick-six. Thanks, Gruden.

Offensive Player of the Year: Alvin Kamara (New Orleans Saints)

No big deal, just 611 combined yards and six touchdowns on a team with a ton of weapons. Shame on everyone for not drafting this dude in the first round.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Darius Leonard (Indianapolis Colts)

If you don’t know this guy, just check the NFL’s league leaders. Leonard leads the league in tackles (54) while also recording four sacks and a forced fumble.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Saquon Barkley (New York Giants)

Although they aren’t throwing the ball well, the New York Giants have a master on the ground. Barkley is ninth in the NFL in rushing yards (260) and he hasn’t put the ball on the ground yet. On top of that, he’s caught 27 balls out of the backfield.
