Liberty Baseball Stays Perfect at Home With 8-2 Win Over Virginia Tech

The Liberty baseball program continued its dominance on Tuesday with a convincing 8-2 win over No. 12 Virginia Tech. It was their fifth win against the ACC this season — the Flames have also knocked off Wake Forest, Virginia, and North Carolina twice — and 16th consecutive home win. They’re a perfect 14-0 this season at their home park.

Liberty scored one run in the third and fourth innings, then blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Starting pitcher Dylan Cumming picked up his first win, throwing six scoreless innings before getting tagged for two runs in the top of the seventh. Cumming, who transferred from the recently defunct Chicago State baseball program, was making his first start in a Liberty uniform. Senior Fraser Ellard picked up his third save of the season after finishing the game with three scoreless innings of relief. He now has a rock-solid 1.90 ERA through 28.1 innings pitched this year.

Five players had multiple hits for the Flames, including Logan Mathieu, who hit his eighth home run of the season (a solo shot in the third) and added a two-run double in their monster fifth inning.

Gray Betts and Aaron Anderson also had two hits apiece. Both players are fighting for the batting crown in the ASUN Conference. Betts raised his average to .358 while Anderson is right behind him at .347. The leader in the batting crown race at the time of print is FGCU’s Brian Ellis (.374 BA).

Liberty improved to 22-8 on the season with the win. They’ll start a weekend series at lowly North Alabama this Friday. The Lions are currently on a nine-game losing streak and have 4-26 record overall.
