WATCH: Jonah Hill Talks Iconic Characters in GQ Interview

First-time director Jonah Hill sat down with GQ to talk about his most iconic roles as an actor. Hill has two Academy Award nominations under his belt for “Moneyball” (2011) and “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013) but he’s been making the rounds promoting his directorial debut. The film, titled “Mid90s,” was also written by Hill and features solid acting performances from Lucas Hedges, Sunny Suljic, and Katherine Waterston (among others).

In the GQ interview, Hill starts out by saying that he had two dreams; the first was to be a filmmaker, while the second was to work with Martin Scorsese. From there, they run down his filmography to talk about his most memorable characters. The first, of course, was Donnie Azoff from The Wolf of Wall Street, followed by Seth from Superbad and four others. While I’ll let you find out for yourself, I was happy to see Cyrus get some love. Cyrus was a critical success (81% on Rotten Tomatoes) with a great cast and the Duplass Brothers directing, yet it rarely gets spoken of. Good for you, GQ. Check it out below:

Mid90s had a limited release on October 19th, 2018 and it wound up tearing the roof off the indie scene. According to Deadline, the skateboarding film earned “2018’s third-best per-screen start” behind Nat Geo’s Free Solo documentary and Eighth Grade. Averaged out, Mid90s brought in $62,375 per screen on its opening weekend. A24, who produced and distributed Mid90s, noted in the Deadline article that the film was especially successful with the 35-and-under crowd.

After the strong opening on the indie circuit, the small-budget film received a wide release in over 1,000 theaters. Deadline reported on November 4th that Hill’s film has brought in over $5 million at the box office. For a passion project without much money, that’s definitely a success.

Mid90s is currently “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes at 76 percent. The audience score, it should be noted, is a rock-solid 83 percent.

Lucas Hedges also did one of these GQ interviews. You can watch that here.
